Read this if you want to change your life in 2022! Must Read
I talk a lot about
wanting to be misunderstood, it's a really important thing if you're going to
do anything new or different in the world it's sometimes misunderstood by good
critics sometimes by selfish critics can be understood. There will be all kinds
and that's okay, it's part of the process, the only way to avoid criticism is
to be completely conventional in everything you do, so how do you respond to
criticism what do you do? good is the right thing to do Is any part of it right
that inspires you and then if you decide along the way the answer is no you
believe that you believe what you are doing is right, no force in the world
will give you Shouldn't be able to budge, you must have a deep skepticism, but
if you decide that your critics are something then you ld change and let me
give you an example from the early days of Amazon where we refused to change
it. Granted, we were so young that most people didn't pay much attention or
care to us. I'm taking you back to like us 1995 1996 We pioneered this thing
called customer reviews and I got a letter from a book publisher one day saying
you shouldn't make your business think you're losing sales because you're
getting negative subscribers on book detail pages. allowing reviews why don't
you just do positive reviews and i thought about it and i thought no that's
wrong we don't make money when we sell things we make money when we get people
to shop So it was a different framing and so getting to today's news you know
we listened to our critics and we decided that the framing we've been using all
these years is competitive compensation Let's see what are the other job
opportunities and competitive compensation levels and we offer competitive
compensation sation and truly non-competitive world leading benefits packages
but just competitive compensation so in light of that you can I'm trying to
decide whether we want to change we realize that we just made a decision
whether you can offer competitive competition or you can decide leadership and
as we framed it in a way that we are like let's lead decide to do I think
people will follow it and it was what the critics said that caught your eye
basically they were saying they were if you read between the lines because a
lot of the specific criticism was not right, But if you read between the lines
what they really wanted us to do is they said because you can also say look
there are a lot of companies, they are all fast food companies, you know the
barista and you know like wait a second why are you focusing on us but what are
they really saying we are focusing on you because you are a leader and we want
you to lead what they are really saying And as soon as you recognize it in a
way that feels empowering, instead of feeling like the criticism they've given
us.
Asking to lead because we are the epitome of innovative
iconic company, we are a gold standard for innovation that we must lead [MUSIC]
You know we all have adversity in our lives I doubt that if you really know if
you know a friend or someone you talk to there is no shortage of adversities
and well that's good because it teaches us how to get back up you fall down you
rise back up It always happens and you know that you get some gifts in life and
you want to take advantage of them, I guess my advice on adversity and success
would be to be proud not of your gifts but your hard work and your choices so
that you know you can get the kind of gifts you know you can get really good at
math it can be really easy for you it's kind of a gift but practice that math
do and take it to the next stage which can be very challenging and difficult
and can take a lot of sweat It's a choice of what you can't really be proud of
your gifts because they were given to you you choose to work hard are choices
you can be proud of people like us we are getting used to being criticized To
challenge is to get into the habit of saying no by other people, found by
people by your customers, by investors, but this is the occasion when everyone
believes it. You have no chance when only a few people believe it. you prove it
this is your chance at the end of the day what has been the driver that made
you Of course you're not happy when people say don't have a good sleep wake up
try it again it's always my fault. If you can't prove it then why can you convince
people but the thing is there are two groups of very important people you have
to convince your team first group people they believe in you do they trust you
and they believe in things we agreed together and the other is uh your
customers they really love your products and investors it's ok this is the
culture in silicon valley That's what makes startups glamorous and I never
really believe . phases where you're going to die constantly and where you get
to a point where you can do some really interesting things and make a lot more
interesting bets, so I don't know I've never read a lot of literature.
This and i mean if i was i wouldn't make so many mistakes
but so i don't know if learning is the right way to go at it for me but i mean
but do i think your model came from somewhere even if it's unintentionally true
like you were influenced by peter thiel or sean vail yeah people look at all
these guys once i met them i really didn't hear about peter thiel before i
talking about yeah yeah but that was massively influential on my thinking i
mean a lot of the early lessons i took from peter and sean to think about
strategy and i paid a lot of attention was when i was growing up to microsoft i
thought i mean i grew up you know windows 3.1 and then windows 95 and i just
thought they were like the most incredible things on a personal level , I think
it's always always good if there's something you're incredibly passionate about
and just so internalize RT found it interesting and that people follow that one
of the propositions I brought up many years ago was to always value substance
over status over prestige and you know if I give it my little was self advice
on what to do or how to think about one's life was doing these things and I
think if I was honest about it a lot of it was driven by prestige and status
and not enough about the substance of really trying to learn things and you
know what I had this kind of, I think about it, this kind of crazy rolling
quarter life crisis and it kind of culminated in this uh, you know the big New
York law firm where you know from the outside that everybody wanted to go in,
everybody wanted to get out you know I walked for seven months and three days
and after uses You know and again me and all you had to do was go through the
front door but people's identities are so wrapped up and the things they
compete for, it was unimaginable for people to actually do that and then the
question was that you knew very well how I ended up there why I didn't think
about it any more and I guess it was that I evaluated so many shortcuts that
was coveted, which I uh that was traditional on what i really wanted to do, so
i guess there's always substance on the situation
